What Conventions Form a Successful music video

• Lip syncing
• Medium close ups
• Band Performance
• Use of differnt camera angles and movement

Mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing and sound all come together to make a music video and make them entertaining and interesting.

I looked at five different music videos all from different genres and listed the aspects that I disliked and liked of each video;

Likes and Dislikes

As an introduction task to the course I analysed 5 current music videos and wrote done my likes and dislikes of these videos.

 

Video 1 - Break the rules - Charli xcx

 

Likes - The styling, i think the costumes, settings and props used within the video suit the concept well linking to the lyrics making a good narrative

Dislikes- I dislike the fact that the video is unoriginal as it can be seen as copycat towards other 'school' based videos such as Britney Spears 'Baby one more time'.

 

Video 2 - Young and Beautiful - Lana Del Rey

 

Likes - I like the use of the silhouettes as it gives a certain feeling to the video, i also like the use of the close ups to the artists face as it shows emotion about the song.

Dislikes- A point i do not like about the video is the dark colouring as it is hard to make out certain aspects of the video.

 

Video 3 - Tough Love - Jessie Ware

 

Likes - I specifically like the editing techniques in this video, for example the rotations that link other scenes of the the video. I also like the pace of the video and all the flash transitions.

Dislikes - I dislike the fact that there is no real definite story to the video as it does not follow a distinct narrative.

 

Video 4 - Robbers - The 1975

 

Likes - I like the narrative in which the video follows, it has a real story. I also like the fact that the video is original and creative. I like the using of the lighting at the beginning of the video when the natural sunlight is beaming through curtains and makes Matt the lead singer look significant.

Dislikes - I dislike the constant changing of settings and the dullness of the whole video.

 

Video 5 - Smoking Gun - Indiana

 

Likes-I like the concpet of the video and the use of the special effects to make it seem video game like. I also like the point of view shots and the flash transitions. 

Dislikes - I do not like the constant use of jiggered transitions wihtin the video I feel it is over used.
