I have done two focus groups, to get a variation of opinions from different age ranges. As in my first focus group I have asked three people ranging from 15 to 43 years of age, however on the other hand I have put a set of questions together to ask a focus group similar to my own age ranging from 17 to 18 to get an insight to what videos people my age (my main target audience) like. Each of my participants all like a variation of different genres of music, such as rock/indie, pop/dance and house/electro, through analysing the answers from my two focus groups I found that there were several ideas and decisions they all agreed on to make a successful video. By doing focus groups this has helped me to discover that I am going to create a mainstream video that particularly focuses on the storyline narrative structure and appeals to a younger audience.
Here is the list of questions I asked my focus groups;
- What is your favourite genre and why you like this genre?
- Do you like a story to unfold in a music video?
- Do you like to see perfomance in a music video?
- Do you like to see humour in a music video?
- What do you think makes a successful music video?
- What do you think makes a unsuccessful music video?
- Does a music video distract away the attention of the importance of the song?
- Has a music video ever persuaded you to go buy a song?
For my second focus group I asked two of my family members to get a wider opinion from people who have not studied media.
