From producing primary market research through the use of a survey gives me a general idea and range of demographics. Researching demographics has allowed me to gain statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it. To determine my target audience and advance my knowledge on the demographics, I created a survey using a specialised site called surveymonkey.com. For responses to my survey I posted the link to the survey on social media sites. From using this survey I was able to create conclusions and analyse the results. My evidence is shown below;
Here is a screen shot that I have taken, I posted my survey link onto the social networking site Facebook to gather a response. I thought by posting my survey onto my Facebook I would reach a wider audience rather than just leaving the survey on surveymonkey.com to be filled in. I also sent an email to my media teacher kindly asking them to send out my survey to the whole college. From doing this it allowed me to get quick responses, here is a screen shot of the evidence that I sent the email to my teacher.
From having my survey on Facebook for 5 days and having sent the email out I have received 51 responses I believe this is enough responses to get could set of data to be analysed.
The start of my survey began with a simple question 'What is your gender?'. I decided to chose this question because on surveymonkey.com the site in which I created my survey on does not have identification on the site therefore by including this question i get to understand my target audience a bit better. From posting my survey on Facebook I had the advantage of gaining a range of responses for example I was able to get results from people of all different age ranges.
With my second question, I asked the age of the participants taking the survey, I did this because my possible target audience for my music video is of younger audience so therefore wanted to analyse the age range. In my responses I got the most results from the age range 18-24 this indicated to me that due to the survey been posted on a social networking site the majority of the age range that use these site are of a younger generation meaning they would be the most likely yo watch my video. In my first question the results that came back were there was more responses from females than males, the exact results been a 62.72% response from females and a 37.25% response from males. I am going to use this information to determine my target audience for my final music video production and appropriately plan my video content based on the information I have received from these music video demographics. As from this survey the main participants where female it is clear that I must make my video appeal mainly to a female audience, however I most not ignore the male participants of this survey and make the video appeal to the minority as well as the majority.
I created this question to see if I could get any further interest rather than just in my own City, the majority of my responses came from Hull I believe this was due to my marketing by sending an email out to my full college with my survey attached. However I did receive some responses from further afield such as North Lincolnshire and New York. By choosing a British artist (Ed Sheeran) I wanted to see if anybody located outside of the UK would take my survey giving me a wider demographic. Due to posting my survey on the social networking site Facebook I have friends across seas over in America that are my friends on Facebook which allows me to know the source of the response from New York. Once my video is produced I will use internet forums/ fan blogs/ YouTube tags to interest a wider and global audience. The accessibility to the internet allows artists who are of a niche audience have the marketing opportunity to extend their audiences.
I decided to choose this question so I could explore the genre of music that people prefer the most due to the fact I want my video to appeal to several demographics. From the results the majority of my responses preferred indie/rock music. Even though my artist is typically associated with the pop genre, I could incorporate conventions from the indie/rock genre to the video so that people with pop interest are not the only ones that will view my video. Indie/rock and pop genre music where to two most popular results of the survey, this was to be expected because to my knowledge and reference to being a 18 year old the two genres that are constantly played on the radio and in the charts are pop and indie/rock music with the odd exception of electronic dance music.
I decided to ask this question as it allowed my participants to give a more than one word response and allow me to see what codes and conventions people like within a music video and why watching a music video is enjoyable for certain people. The majority of my responses say that they do enjoy watching music videos which points out the importance to me that my video needs to visually pleasing for the audience to enjoy the content of the video. One specific response caught my attention which was "yes, because the videos illustrates the purpose of music. it also shows what the music is about" this gave me the idea that the lyrics need to be portrayed within the video to give the audience a perspective of the song and the meaning of the lyrics. I am going to take some of these responses and incorporate some of the thoughts and ideas into my own music video to appeal to my target audience.
For question number six I asked 'How often do you watch music videos?' and had the response boxes; everyday, every couple of days, a couple of days a week, never and only in educational purposes. The majority of my responses showed that people watch music videos 'every couple of days'. From this result it showed me that music videos do have a significant effect on the success of the song and publicity of an artist, as the majority of a younger audience typically teenagers view the music videos to
